Purpose

Students will explore mathematical concepts of geometry through the lens of artistic creation, guided by an essential question that explores the connection between math and art. They will discover how the calculation of areas in polygons and composite figures can inspire artistic perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding that extends beyond traditional academic boundaries. Students will express their understanding visually by creating unique art pieces, then share their work in a classroom-based "gallery launch," where they present art and artist statements to peers, before exhibiting them at the local elementary school.

Learning goals

Students will learn to apply their knowledge of geometry by calculating the area of regular polygons and composite figures. They will develop skills in using the apothem formula, breaking down complex shapes into triangles, and utilizing trigonometry for area calculations. Through this hands-on project, students will deepen their understanding by designing and creating a piece of art, honing both their geometric reasoning and artistic expression. The project culminates in a collaborative art curation shared and celebrated in a community exhibition, reinforcing their ability to communicate mathematical ideas through creative projects.

Products

Each group will craft a cohesive art collection composed of individual geometric pieces from each member, adhering to a central theme they decide collaboratively. These works will utilize concepts of area calculation for regular polygons and composite figures, exhibited through techniques involving the apothem and trigonometric triangle division. Alongside their artwork, students will compose artist statements explaining their mathematical process and artistic vision. For the project launch, students can engage in a virtual gallery tour featuring famous geometric artworks, setting a foundation of inspiration and insight. The artworks and statements will be professionally showcased at the local elementary school's library, creating a public exhibition for a broader audience.

Launch

Begin the project with a virtual exploration of famous geometric artworks using online resources, allowing students to delve into how artists utilize shapes and patterns. Invite students to analyze and discuss these artworks in small groups, considering how geometry influences aesthetics. This activity will ignite their interest and provide insight into the practical application of mathematics in art, motivating their own creative process. Follow up with a group discussion that connects these observations to the essential question, preparing them for the collaborative art creation ahead.

Exhibition

Students will organize an exhibition of their geometric art pieces and artist statements within the school's own common area or hallway, easily accessible for viewing. They will invite teachers, fellow students, and select family members over lunch or a convenient after-school period, enabling an interactive dialogue with the school community. The exhibition will demonstrate how mathematical exploration informs artistic expression, with each group's collection illustrating a cohesive theme that blends individual creativity with geometric principles.
