Purpose

In this project, second graders engage in an interactive exploration of healthy habits encompassing sleep, nutrition, exercise, and relationships. By blending science and creativity, students discover how these components enhance their mood and learning abilities. Through hands-on experiences and collaborative exhibitions, they develop practical skills to integrate wellness into daily life while fostering deeper connections with themselves and their community.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project aim to develop students' understanding of how personal habits affect their mental and physical well-being, focusing on sleep, exercise, nutrition, and relationships. Students will learn to identify mood changes related to their bedtime routines, recognize the importance of healthy meals for emotional balance, and understand the role of physical activity in relaxation and energy levels. Through hands-on experiences, students will actively engage in creating and assessing wellness practices, reflecting on sleep patterns, and sharing insights about maintaining healthy relationships, all while developing presentation skills at the Wellness Fair.

Products

Students will create a 'Feelings and Energy Calendar,' illustrating and annotating their daily experiences linked to sleep and activities, which serves as a visual reflection of their personal growth. Each calendar entry will incorporate observations from their sleep log, reflecting their mood and energy levels. This calendar will be utilized in weekly reflections, shared during the 'Wellness Fair,' and exhibited at the final project showcase, highlighting the connection between healthy habits and their everyday interactions and learning.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Bedtime Routine Bonanza,' inviting students and their families to bring favorite bedtime stories and demonstrate calming rituals. Families share how they set up sleep environments that prioritize rest and relaxation. Through this interactive event, students will gain firsthand insights into creating comfortable bedtime routines, setting the stage for further exploration into the impact of these practices on daily life and learning.

Exhibition

Students will culminate their project with a 'Relationship Recipe Exchange,' inviting the community to experience their creative recipes for mood-enhancing meals. To enrich this event, local nutritionists and chefs will attend, providing feedback and engaging discussions about healthy eating strategies. Students will showcase both their culinary creations and insights about how nutrition impacts their daily learning and emotional wellbeing. This festive exhibition allows students to display their achievements and learn directly from professionals and peers.
