Purpose

This project provides students with an authentic, immersive opportunity to step into their future career interests. By engaging in first-hand experiences and multimedia storytelling, students gain essential skills in professional communication, media production, and self-reflection. The experience encourages students to critically explore career paths while developing competencies in project management, collaboration, and academic mindset. Through partnerships with industry professionals, this initiative connects classroom learning to real-world applications, preparing students for future academic and career endeavors.

Learning goals

Students will develop practical career readiness by engaging in real-world experiences and building effective communication skills through mentorship and workplace interactions. They will enhance their media production abilities by mastering storyboarding, narrative structure, and technical video editing. Critical thinking will be fostered as students document and reflect on their experiences, encouraging them to evaluate career fit and personal interests. Through collaboration and self-directed learning, students will gain insights into professional environments, facilitating informed decision-making about their future career paths.

Competencies
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create Dream Job Research Briefs that provide insights into their chosen career paths. As the main product, each student will produce a professionally edited short-form video titled “POV: Day in the Life of a [Career Title],” which visually narrates their internship experience. An additional product will include a written or recorded reflection video answering career evaluation questions. All these works will be compiled into a digital showcase accessible online, supplemented with visual boards from the Dream Job Vision Board Workshop to illustrate career aspirations and research.

Launch

Kick off the project with an engaging 'Dream Job Vision Board Workshop.' In this collaborative session, have students create visual boards that encapsulate their career aspirations, research findings, and potential future paths. Encourage them to use images, keywords, and facts gained from preliminary research to inspire and clarify their personal journey as they embark on the project. This exercise will spark creativity and set a visual foundation for their exploration and storytelling process.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, each student's video will be featured in a 'Learning Celebration Gallery' where attendees can preview their career journeys. This exhibition space will also include visual displays of the students' research briefs and personal reflections, allowing the community to engage deeply with both the narrative and analytical aspects of the students' learning experiences. The gallery will be open for the school community, providing ample opportunity for attendees to absorb each student's perspective without time constraints.
