Purpose

Create a cohesive and evocative instrumental album that showcases your ability to blend musical theory, songwriting, and production techniques. Delve into the expressive power of instrumental music by researching historical and contemporary compositions and experimenting with new instruments and production tools. Through this project, develop both technical skills and a deeper understanding of how music can convey emotions, stories, and themes without lyrics.

Learning goals

In this project, aim to deepen your understanding of music theory and songwriting, while acquiring skills in music production using digital audio workstations like Ableton. Expand your instrumental capabilities by learning to play new instruments, such as the bass and guitar, which will support the expression of your musical ideas. Develop an ability to analyze and critique production techniques by exploring examples of overproduced and underproduced music. Engage in critical thinking and reflection on how music can convey emotions, stories, and lessons, and use these insights to craft an instrumental album that presents a cohesive narrative. Collaborate with mentors and peers for feedback, and utilize their input to iteratively refine your compositions and production.

Products

You will create an instrumental album that conveys a clear narrative or emotional journey through your original compositions, culminating in an exhibition where you showcase the completed album through speakers. Alongside the audio tracks, you will design a 3D model of the album cover, encapsulating the feelings, emotions, or stories reflected in your music. Throughout the project, craft a series of artist statements that articulate your creative process and insights gained from each new skill, including reflections on learning new instruments and using DAWs. During the critique and revision process, refine your tracks and instrumentation techniques, incorporating feedback to enhance your final product.

Launch

Create a dynamic introduction by conducting a survey among peers to gather insights on their favorite music genres and artists, alongside reasons for their preferences. Use these findings to fuel a 'Sound Exploration Workshop' where you experiment with various instruments and music production tools in a studio-like environment. This hands-on session will allow for the discovery of new sounds and techniques and set the foundational tone for your musical journey ahead.

Exhibition

Organize a community listening event where you showcase your album to friends, family, and fellow musicians. Set up listening stations with headphones for an intimate experience, or play the album through speakers for a collective listening session. Display the 3D model of your album cover prominently, and prepare a brief presentation or Q&A session to discuss the narrative and emotional journey conveyed in your music. Invite attendees to share feedback and engage in discussions about the themes explored in your album.
