Purpose

Your senior project is designed to cultivate essential caretaking competencies by integrating hands-on experiences within a hospice setting. Engage actively in patient care and healthcare observation to enrich your understanding of clinical environments. Through collaboration with Apreva Hospice, you will reflect on your experiences and demonstrate growth through daily mentorship and continuous skill refinement. This project allows you to address critical questions about hospice care's role in enhancing life quality for terminal patients, culminating in an exhibition that shares your journey and insights with your community.

Learning goals

Throughout your internship at Apreva Hospice, you'll develop critical caretaking skills including empathy, patience, and effective communication in a clinical setting. You'll engage deeply with the essential question of how hospice care enhances the quality of life for terminally ill patients, fostering your ability to think critically and solve problems in real-world situations. Your experiences will cultivate key competencies in healthcare, preparing you to thoughtfully address complex questions and make meaningful contributions to your community.

Competencies
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout your senior project, you will create detailed blog entries capturing your experiences and reflections, which will help deepen your understanding of hospice care. At the end of the project, you will compile a comprehensive report showcasing your learning journey, skills acquired, and insights gained from shadowing professionals at Apreva Hospice. This report, along with photographs documenting your work and contributions, will be presented during an exhibition to family, friends, and community members, highlighting the impact of your participation in hospice care.

Launch

Begin your project by attending an orientation session at Apreva Hospice, where you will meet the nurses and staff you will be working with. Participate in an introductory discussion about the critical role hospice care plays in enhancing the quality of life for terminally ill patients. Engage in a guided tour of the facility to familiarize yourself with the clinical settings and the daily operations. Use this opportunity to ask questions and set personal learning goals that align with your essential question. This will set the stage for your hands-on experience and help you integrate into the community you're about to serve.

Exhibition

You will organize an exhibition that highlights your volunteer experiences and insights at Apreva Hospice. Display photo documentation of key moments, along with a personal report detailing the skills you acquired, patient care methods observed, and the emotional aspects of working in hospice care. Incorporate reflective blog entries to give visitors a deeper understanding of your journey and growth throughout the internship. Invite community members, family, and peers to view and discuss the impact hospice care has on enhancing the quality of life for terminally ill patients.
