Purpose

Create a website that bridges the gap between resources and those in need within San Diego by developing a platform that offers free or affordable local assistance. Provide exposure to small, under-recognized businesses and nonprofits by integrating them into your web design, ensuring they become accessible and known to those who need their services. Focus on building a digital tool that simplifies the process of accessing vital community resources while documenting user engagement and refining the platform through continuous feedback and iteration. By engaging in real-world interactions and research, develop a project that not only serves a purpose during the school term but continues to benefit the community thereafter.

Learning goals

You will hone critical thinking and problem-solving skills by exploring and evaluating a variety of approaches to understand and address community needs in San Diego. Develop content expertise as you research local resources and refine digital design skills to create an impactful website. Collaborate with peers and community partners to co-design tools and make informed decisions, strengthening your leadership abilities. Engage in self-directed learning by seeking feedback, reflecting on your progress, and iterating on your design to enhance the website's effectiveness.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

You will create a live, publicly accessible website tailored to help people in San Diego find local resources. This website will be the culmination of research, collaboration, and user-centered design, featuring an intuitive interface and easy navigation. Alongside the website, you will prepare a brief slideshow presentation detailing the development process, design choices, and the impact on the community. Your final product will also include user statistics and feedback that demonstrate how effectively the website meets community needs.

Launch

Begin by examining and discussing various real-world examples of resource-focused websites designed to assist communities. Engage in discussions with teachers and peers about the pressing needs of people in San Diego, identifying key categories to focus on. This collaborative dialogue will enable you to refine your project's scope and priorities. Organize a brainstorming session where you synthesize initial ideas and form the foundational vision for your website.

Exhibition

Create an interactive exhibition for your website. Set up live demonstration stations where attendees can explore your site’s features and functionality first-hand. Design a rotating slideshow presentation that outlines your development journey, the research that informed your project, and the impact statistics you’ve gathered. Encourage visitors to provide immediate feedback via a digital survey accessible on your site. Collaborate with community partners to share testimonials or success stories as part of your presentation.
