Idea Harvest and Sketch

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving Content Expertise Collaboration Self Directed Learning Assessment Critique and Revision Submission Required

Partner with a classmate to generate a wide set of concepts addressing how San Diego residents access local resources. Begin with a brief user empathy step to capture direct insights (persona snapshot or user need cards). Compile a brainstorm document with many ideas (quantity over polish). Create rough concept sketches or storyboards illustrating user flows and key features of the proposed website. Build a Feasibility/Impact matrix to compare ideas on desirability, viability, and effort. From these, select your Top 3 concepts and write concise rationales explaining how they meet user needs and potential impact. Be prepared to share with peers for feedback and plan refinements.

Preparation (3 items)
  • Arrange seating for pairs, ensure enough space for sketching materials. Prepare user need cards and example scenario cards for empathy step.
  • Ensure availability of brainstorming materials like large paper, markers for sketching, and printed templates for the feasibility/impact matrix.
  • Set up a system for quick feedback sharing, such as sticky notes or digital feedback forms.
Student-facing instructions
You will partner with a classmate to generate ideas on how San Diego residents can better access local resources through a website. Start with creating a persona snapshot based on user needs, followed by a brainstorming session to come up with as many concepts as possible. Next, work together to sketch your ideas using storyboards to showcase user flows and key features. Develop a feasibility/impact matrix to evaluate each idea's desirability, viability, and effort needed. Finally, select your Top 3 concepts with clear rationales that explain their potential impact and alignment with user needs and be ready to share them with peers for feedback.
