Purpose

The purpose of this project is to dive into the practicalities of designing an enclosure that meets the survival needs of a tortoise through collaborative and experiential learning. You'll apply real-world problem-solving skills, engage meaningfully with community experts, and refine your design through peer feedback, ensuring a thoughtful approach to habitat creation. By showcasing your enclosure, you'll communicate insights gained and contribute to discussions on sustainable animal habitats, fostering deeper understanding and connection within your community.

Learning goals

Immerse yourself in authentic problem-solving to understand complex ecological needs, honing your skills in constructing a functional tortoise enclosure. Collaborate effectively with peers and community partners to develop the enclosure design, practicing shared decision-making and leadership. Communicate your process and findings empathetically to diverse audiences, refining your ability to present and reflect on experiential learning. Develop content expertise through hands-on crafting and thoughtful design, ensuring all components align with the tortoise's survival essentials. Engage critically with innovative approaches to sustainability, exploring how the enclosure can reflect a natural habitat while considering broader environmental impacts.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

During the learning experience, craft a detailed design plan and prototype for a tortoise enclosure that demonstrates your understanding of the species' natural habitat needs. Collaboratively produce construction drawings and identify materials in partnership with local carpenters or a woodworking club to execute building the wooden structure of the enclosure. By the project's completion, you will present the final enclosure at the 'Tortoise Habitat Expo,' along with an interactive presentation that reflects on your design choices, construction process, and feedback gathered from the community.

Launch

Begin your project with a visit to a local park or nature reserve where tortoises can be found in their natural habitats. During this nature walk, observe and document their behaviors, environmental preferences, and survival strategies. Take notes on how environmental features like water sources and shelter impact their wellbeing to inform your enclosure design. Engage with park rangers or local wildlife experts to deepen your understanding of the species’ needs.

Exhibition

Create a dynamic 'Tortoise Habitat Expo' where you present your completed enclosure alongside detailed explanations of design elements and decisions. Engage visitors with interactive presentations and allow them to ask questions about the project's challenges and successes. Invite classmates, teachers, and local community members to participate, fostering a collaborative atmosphere for feedback and reflection. Showcase the woodworking skills acquired and highlight how each component supports the tortoise's essential survival needs, making the connection between creativity and practical application evident.
