Purpose

Channel your passion for music to explore the adolescent journey of Generation Alpha by creating a meaningful music album. Dive into the rich soundscape of San Diego, connecting with local bands to capture authentic emotions and experiences. Collaborate with peers to write and produce a minimum of eight songs, with creative liner notes and packaging artwork that reflects the theme. Use this project to refine your musical skills, embrace feedback, and share your album with peers and family, fostering a sense of belonging and academic growth.

Learning goals

Develop technical and creative skills in songwriting, music production, and audio recording to express the adolescent experience as Generation Alpha. Enhance collaboration skills by co-designing lyrics and compositions with peers, and decision-making on album production. Strengthen communication by practicing active listening during interviews with influential bands and sharing your narrative in album liner notes. Cultivate critical thinking through analysis of historical influences in music and crafting songs that resonate with modern themes. Foster self-directed learning, using feedback for refining your work, and reflecting on your growth throughout the project's duration.

Products

By the end of the project, you will create a music album consisting of at least 8 songs, complete with liner notes that describe the album's thematic journey. As part of your album packaging, design original artwork using graphic design, drawing, or photography to visually represent the emotions and narrative of Generation Alpha. Throughout the project, collaborate with peers to refine lyrics and sound, and incorporate feedback from local San Diego band interviews to deepen your musical understanding and album authenticity.

Launch

Begin by hosting a listening session where you share music from influential local San Diego bands, allowing you to discuss the emotional impact of their lyrics and sounds. Facilitate a collaborative brainstorming session afterward to explore personal adolescent experiences and themes important to Generation Alpha. Invite a guest artist from the local music scene to share insights on songwriting and the creative process, providing real-world context to inspire your project kickoff.

Exhibition

Invite peers, family, local musicians, and community members to a live album release party where you perform songs from your album. Design a physical or digital gallery showcasing your album artwork, liner notes, and behind-the-scenes footage or interviews from local bands. Facilitate a listening session where attendees can explore each track with guided commentary, discussing how it reflects adolescent experiences unique to Generation Alpha. Organize breakout sessions for interactive critiques, offering opportunities for guests to share their thoughts and feedback on your musical and thematic choices. Record the whole event and share highlights on social media platforms for broader community engagement and reflection.
