Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to connect students with the critical understanding of how personal health choices today influence their long-term wellbeing, through the examination of metabolic syndrome. By engaging collaboratively in research, presentations, and reflection, students will cultivate a deeper insight into their health impacts and actively design personalized health goals. This project bridges academic knowledge with real-world relevance, inviting students to explore the intersections of biology, lifestyle, and community health, while fostering self-awareness and proactive health planning.

Learning goals

Students will deepen their understanding of the intricate connections between their present health choices and future well-being by analyzing metabolic syndrome's effects on different body systems. They will enhance their communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills through peer-led discussions and evaluations, integrate real-world data with expert insights, and share their findings in various formats. Reflective practices will strengthen their academic mindset, helping them develop personal health pledges and visual representations of their future health goals, fostering a lifelong commitment to their well-being.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

During this learning experience, students will produce a research paper and a slide show presentation, demonstrating their understanding of how metabolic syndrome affects a specific body system. Additionally, they will create a visual representation poster that outlines their future health goals and personal health pledges to achieve a healthier lifestyle. These products will be compiled into a digital portfolio, showcasing their comprehensive growth and learning journey, and shared during a school-wide exhibition involving community members and family.

Launch

To spark curiosity and frame the project's context, initiate a dynamic launch event by organizing an interactive workshop featuring guest speakers, including health professionals from the University of Arizona Nutrition. Begin with a captivating video on metabolic syndrome to set the scene, followed by an engaging group discussion exploring the essential questions of the project. Facilitate hands-on activities where students work in teams to analyze real-world health data and make initial predictions about how their current choices might impact their future health, setting the tone for deeper investigation throughout the project.

Exhibition

For the culminating exhibition, students will present their research papers and slide shows to an audience that includes classmates, teachers, and University of Arizona Nutrition experts. This event will also feature an interactive gallery walk where visual representations of students' future health pledges will be displayed, allowing community members, parents, and classmates to engage with and discuss these creative commitments. The exhibition will serve as a platform for students to articulate their learning journey and insights, further enriched by real-time feedback and dialogue with diverse attendees.
