Purpose

Through this project, students are invited to explore emotional depth and expression in both fiction and language, fostering empathy and perspective-taking. By navigating the internal world of their imagined monster using French, they enhance their proficiency and communication skills while connecting language learning to authentic emotional narratives. The project strengthens collaboration, critical thinking, and self-directed learning as students craft, revise, and present their narratives, ultimately enriching their understanding of language as a tool for emotional storytelling.

Learning goals

Students will identify and articulate complex emotional experiences in fictional characters through collaborative storytelling and French language use, enhancing empathy and perspective-taking skills. They will engage in peer feedback and self-reflection activities to refine their communication and collaboration abilities, fostering effective conflict resolution and shared decision-making. Students will apply critical thinking to develop innovative approaches in crafting detailed backstories and visual representations of emotional events. By engaging in performances, creating posters, and participating in critiques, they will gain proficiency in emotional vocabulary in French, building content expertise and self-directed learning skills.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create a richly detailed poster that captures a pivotal emotional event in their monster's journey, accompanied by French captions that provide layers of emotional insight. Additionally, they will develop and perform a monologue in French during the exhibition, allowing them to portray the complexity of their character's emotional experiences. As part of their project evolution, students will participate in critiquing sessions to refine their script for the monologue and ensure accuracy and depth in their French language use. The creation of a classroom 'emotion map' will further deepen their understanding of emotional dynamics and enhance collaborative discussions.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic "Monster Mystery Workshop" where students come together and use collective imagination to unravel the emotional narrative of a hidden monster. These collaborative storytelling sessions invite students to contribute diverse perspectives as they brainstorm the internal world of a monster, focusing on emotions such as fear, loneliness, and anxiety. This group activity sets the groundwork for immersive exploration by linking their creative ideas to the French language's emotional lexicon, fostering immediate peer collaboration and empathy.

Exhibition

In the spring exhibition, students will present their crafted posters and perform their French monologues, showcasing the emotional journey of their monsters. The event will invite peers and family, encouraging dialogue about the use of language in conveying complex emotions. Attendees can interact with students through a Q&A session to deepen understanding and appreciation of the characters' emotional depths. The exhibition will also include a display of the class emotion map, allowing visitors to explore the collective emotional narratives developed collaboratively throughout the project.
