Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to actively engage students in understanding the complexity of imperialism by exploring the interplay of ideology, technology, and perspectives from both colonizers and the colonized. It aims to develop critical thinking and analytical skills through the examination of primary sources and collaborative projects, while encouraging self-reflection on historical and contemporary global issues. Through interactive activities and creative expressions, students will critically assess the real-world implications and enduring impacts of imperialism on societies around the world.

Learning goals

Students will critically analyze primary sources to understand the varied ideologies that justified imperialism and how these beliefs shaped the economic, political, and cultural landscape globally between 1750 and 1900. They will develop an ability to utilize sourcing techniques to evaluate conflicting perspectives, enhancing their skills in historical interpretation and empathy towards different viewpoints. Through interactive and collaborative projects, students will explore the advancements and consequences of imperial expansion, fostering their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities essential for understanding complex global interactions.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will create a visually rich timeline highlighting the significant ideologies, technological advancements, and perspectives that shaped imperialism between 1750 and 1900. Additionally, they will construct an interactive map or digital presentation using multimedia tools to demonstrate the global changes driven by imperialism, integrating perspectives from both imperial and colonial viewpoints. These products will be shared and discussed in a class exhibition to synthesize and communicate their findings.

Launch

Kick off with "Perspectives Uncovered," a sourcing workshop where students examine primary sources like letters, political cartoons, and speeches from both imperial and colonial perspectives. Working in small groups, students will analyze these artifacts to identify underlying ideologies and their justifications for imperialism. They will collaborate to create a mural that visually represents these differing viewpoints, focusing on the ideological implications and the impact on societies involved. This immersive activity sets the stage for deeper exploration and understanding of imperial motivations and consequences.

Exhibition

Students will present their interactive maps or digital presentations to classmates, showcasing their understanding of imperialism's global impact. During the exhibition, each group will discuss their analysis of technological and cultural shifts, highlighting critical sources from both sides of the imperial debate. This exhibition allows peers to explore differing perspectives and facilitates a class-wide discussion on the implications of ideological justifications for imperialism.
