The Challenge

The Mt. Everett Nature Trail, initially designed to inspire outdoor appreciation, now faces challenges of neglect and diminished educational potential. This situation calls for innovative approaches to restore its functionality and enrich its ecological and educational role, fostering improved community involvement and environmental stewardship.

Challenge Question

How can students transform the Mt. Everett Nature Trail into an engaging educational resource that enriches both their school's community and the surrounding area?

Competencies
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Learning Partners and Clients

Students will collaborate with community organizations such as Greenagers, Mass Audubon, and Western MA Hilltown Hikers to develop their understanding of trail maintenance and environmental education. These learning partners will support student work by providing expertise, resources, and opportunities for active engagement with the trail restoration process. Collaboration with Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation and Lime Kiln Farm Wildlife Sanctuary will enable students to gather insights into conservation practices and enhance the educational value of the Mt. Everett Nature Trail.

Phase Outcomes

Phase Learning Outcome
Discover
I can identify the nature trail challenge and its root causes by exploring the trail, observing its current state, and engaging with local experts in discussions that highlight its potential for educational and community improvement.
Examine
I can research the environmental impact and educational benefits of the trail by studying local biodiversity, synthesizing data on trail usage, and collaborating with conservation groups to understand how revitalizing the trail could serve the community.
Engineer
I can develop creative and sustainable improvements for the nature trail that integrate educational and environmental enhancements, leveraging insights gained from research and community feedback to craft solutions that benefit both the trail ecosystem and its users.
Do
I can execute the planned improvements by working in teams to implement construction and educational features, measure ecological impact, and analyze collected data to ensure the enhancements effectively meet the needs of trail users and the environment.
Share
I can present my contributions and learning journey in a community exhibition, using storytelling and multimedia to reflect on the project’s outcomes, personal growth, and the role of active environmental stewardship in fostering positive community change.
