Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to foster a deep understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity by engaging students in meaningful dialogues and creative projects. Through active participation in discussions and art creation, students will explore personal and collective identities while developing skills in empathy, communication, and conflict resolution. This experience aims to build an inclusive school environment where diverse cultural narratives are respected and valued.

Learning goals

Students will actively engage in building empathy and communication skills by participating in community dialogues and role-plays. They will reflect on their own cultural identities and explore how diverse perspectives contribute to a respectful and inclusive community. Through creative expression, such as the mural project, students will integrate cultural narratives into a tangible representation of inclusivity. They will develop conflict resolution techniques and practice positive self-talk to grow in confidence and self-awareness.

Products

Throughout the learning experience, students will collaboratively create a mural or art installation that embodies themes of cultural respect and inclusivity. In addition, they will maintain Individual 'Gratitude Journals' that document personal growth and cultural insights, which collectively contribute to their self-awareness and cultural competence. By the end of the lesson, students will also prepare and deliver presentations to school administrators and peers, showcasing their learning journey and articulating how diverse cultural narratives have enriched their understanding of community dynamics.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Global Perspectives Panel' where community members from various cultural backgrounds share personal stories and historical perspectives. Follow this with dynamic 'Identity-In-Action Roundtables' that encourage students to discuss and reflect on their own identities in relation to different cultural narratives. This interactive launch invites students to connect these diverse experiences to the essential question, setting a foundation for deeper exploration of cultural respect and inclusivity throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will present their mural or art installation to school administrators, students, and community members during an Exhibition Day event. Each group of students will have the opportunity to explain the cultural stories and experiences that inspired their artwork, and discuss the significance of inclusivity and respect within their creations. The exhibition will feature guided tours where students lead attendees through their thought processes and reflections gathered in their gratitude journals.
