The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students across diverse grade levels in a collaborative exploration of Long Island's arts community, emphasizing its historical and contemporary significance. Through hands-on project-based activities, students will develop effective communication skills while participating in community-building exercises alongside local artists. The culmination of this experience is the arts festival, where students will showcase their understanding and advocacy for arts accessibility, fostering a deeper connection between the arts and community development.
Learning goals
Students will deepen their understanding of the arts as a community-building force by researching Long Island's artistic heritage and its influence on the community. They will cultivate effective communication skills by engaging with local artists to explore the accessibility and impact of arts. Through collaborative creation and presentation, students will develop advocacy strategies to highlight the importance of arts in regional development. The project aims to foster reflection and critical thinking by encouraging students to critique their own and others' contributions, envisioning ways to enhance arts visibility and accessibility across communities.

Products
Students will collaboratively create an arts festival, showcasing live presentations and interactive installations that highlight their insights about arts accessibility and advocacy. They will also develop a comprehensive digital archive website featuring documentaries and virtual reality experiences that explore Long Island’s arts scene, serving as an enduring resource. These products will include collective research outputs, interactive art pieces inspired by local workshops, and multimedia exhibits through collaboration with local artists and community partners.
Launch
Kick off the learning experience with 'The Arts Connection Retreat,' which brings students together with local musicians, dancers, and visual artists. This day will be filled with interactive activities designed to encourage students to reflect on their roles within the arts ecosystem. Through collaborative exercises, students will begin to explore their personal connections to the arts and how they can actively participate in fostering arts accessibility and advocacy in their community.
Exhibition
Students will create an immersive installation titled "Reimagining Long Island," showcasing their interpretations of the island's artistic future. This exhibit will feature interactive displays combining visual, auditory, and performance arts, accompanied by a curated virtual reality experience. Through these elements, students will demonstrate how they envision the arts can continue to influence and unite Long Island communities, inviting festival visitors to engage and reflect on the power of the local arts scene.
