Purpose

This project aims to immerse third-grade students in an enriching exploration of cultural heritage through the lens of influential figures. By connecting personal history with broader cultural narratives, students celebrate diversity and develop a deep appreciation for their own and peers' backgrounds. The experience strengthens core competencies such as effective communication, critical thinking, and collaboration while fostering a sense of identity and belonging through hands-on, meaningful engagement.

Learning goals

Students will develop research skills by exploring the lives and impacts of cultural heroes, utilizing both physical texts and digital resources to gather comprehensive information. They will enhance their communication skills through interactive presentations and exhibit tours, focusing on empathy and clarity. Through collaborative critique and revision processes, students will refine their projects while building relational and decision-making skills with peers and family members. The project encourages reflective thinking about personal and cultural identity, fostering a deep sense of connection to their heritage and inspiring proactive engagement in their communities.

  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will create handmade artifacts representing their chosen hero's essence, displayed during the 'Hall of Heroes Exhibit.' Each student will compose a personal letter to their hero, reflecting on their achievements' impact on their life, to be showcased during the 'Gallery Walk.' Additionally, students will develop a detailed trifold poster presenting their hero's influence, prepared to share with peers, family, and other community members. These products will be complemented by digital presentations, adding interactive elements as part of the mini-museum guides experience.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a vibrant 'Cultural Heroes Founders Fair,' transforming the classroom into a lively marketplace of heritage. Students bring objects or share family stories that connect to their chosen hero, creating an interactive and engaging swap-meet atmosphere. This event invites families and peers to discover diverse backgrounds and experiences, sparking excitement and curiosity about the diverse influences that shape each student's cultural identity.

Exhibition

Transform classrooms into dynamic mini-museums for a 'Hall of Heroes Exhibit,' where students guide peers and families through their visual presentations, artifacts, and digital content. As part of the exhibit, students will showcase their handmade artifacts and personal letters to their heroes, creating an immersive experience. Inviting family members and classmates to engage in discussions and question sessions will enrich the event, fostering a deep appreciation of each hero's impact and cultural legacy.
