Purpose

This project immerses students in a journey through historical and fictional narratives, exemplifying how empathy can shape personal and societal change. Students will explore key figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and characters from "The Hunger Games" to critically assess and reflect on empathy's role in addressing injustice and fostering meaningful transformations. Through collaborative projects, students will apply innovative approaches to evaluate multiple perspectives, culminating in exhibitions and presentations that deepen their understanding and connection to their communities.

Learning goals

Students will engage in an immersive project exploring the role of empathy in narrative and societal transformation, using "The Hunger Games" as a framework. By analyzing historical and fictional examples, students will develop the ability to use historical empathy and contextualization. They will collaborate to co-design empathy-driven initiatives that address authentic community issues, practicing skills such as effective communication, critical thinking, and leadership. Throughout the project, students will cultivate an academic mindset, strengthen their sense of identity and belonging, and apply content expertise to produce work that reflects their understanding and aspirations for social change.

Products

Throughout this project, students will collaboratively create empathy maps for historic figures and characters from "The Hunger Games" to visually represent different perspectives and emotions. By the end of the four-week period, they will present an original peace-building proposal inspired by their research on empathy-driven leaders and fictional archetypes. Each proposal will be shared through a multimedia presentation, allowing students to exhibit their understanding of historical empathy and its implications for social change.

Launch

Begin the project with an immersive role-play scenario where students are transported into the world of "The Hunger Games." As characters tasked with making critical decisions based on empathy and contextual understanding, they will navigate challenges that resemble historical turning points. Working in teams, they will collaboratively map out strategies to address injustice and promote societal change, fostering collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. This engaging launch will ignite curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration of empathy's impact on personal and collective narratives.

Exhibition

Students will organize a community showcase featuring "Empathy Narratives" designed collaboratively in their class groups. Each project will present historical and fictional empathy-driven stories, such as those of Martin Luther King Jr. and Katniss Everdeen, through multimedia presentations or performances. Participants will engage attendees through interactive discussions on empathy's role in societal transformation, fostering dialogue across diverse perspectives. The exhibition will encourage reflection on personal connections to these narratives, promoting critical thinking and deeper understanding of historical turning points.
