Purpose

This hands-on learning experience aims to cultivate empathy and accountability in young students by immersing them in the essentials of pet care. Through interactive activities and collaboration with community partners, students explore concepts of health, budget management, and animal well-being in a simulated pet care project. The experience supports personal growth, enhances critical thinking, and fosters a sense of responsibility, all while aligning with educational standards and competencies.

Learning goals

Students will gain an understanding of the responsibilities involved in pet care, including financial planning and health maintenance. They will develop skills in creative thinking, communication, and collaboration through interactive activities like the Pet Needs Puzzle and Pet Needs mural. Through engaging with community partners and practicing self-reflection, students will enhance their ability to self-direct learning and build a sense of belonging and confidence in their ability to care for a pet.

Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 1-LS3-1 - Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a 'Pet Needs Puzzle' where they design individual puzzle pieces showcasing various aspects of pet care, ultimately forming a complete image of a nurtured pet environment. A collaborative 'Pet Needs' mural will be assembled as students contribute drawings and cutouts that illustrate the healthy habits and environments required for pets. Additionally, each student will develop a large-format poster with captions and illustrations for the 'Pet Parade of Learning,' offering a visual storytelling of their imaginative pet care journey.

Launch

Begin the project with an exciting 'Pet Owner Camp,' where each student engages in hands-on activities such as building a miniature pet home with blocks or crafts, and preparing food for imaginary pets using colorful play-dough. Rotate stations will include practicing pet care skills like grooming and gentle handling techniques using stuffed animals. The camp fosters creative exploration and ensures all students, including non-verbal participants, contribute meaningfully through both physical interaction and expressive projects.

Exhibition

Host a colorful 'Pet Parade of Learning' where students showcase their large format posters, complete with lively captions and detailed illustrations of their imaginary pet care journey. Each student takes turns explaining their poster during a guided walkthrough, inviting guests to participate by sharing observations and asking questions. This engaging exhibition offers a chance for students to communicate their learning through creative visual storytelling, strengthening their ability to convey essential pet care concepts to a broader audience.
