Purpose

The purpose of the learning experience is to immerse kindergarten students in a dynamic and interactive exploration of their community's economy. Students will engage in hands-on activities that illustrate the movement of goods and services, helping them understand why and how these elements are vital in community functioning. Through role-playing, collaboration, and practical projects, students will gain foundational economic concepts, enhance their phonics and decoding skills, and develop awareness of community structures and roles, ultimately preparing them for future real-world interactions.

Learning goals

Students will understand the difference between goods and services within their community by actively participating in experiential activities and role-playing scenarios. They will utilize basic phonics and decoding skills to navigate environmental print and signage, integrating these skills into real-world contexts. Through collaborative projects and community partner interactions, students will grasp the concept of economic transactions and the movement of people and goods, enhancing their ability to articulate the roles of goods and services while fostering community awareness and geographic understanding.

Standards
  • [Kentucky] RF.K.3 - Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
  • [Kentucky] K.E.MI.1 - Describe why people purchase goods and services.
  • [Kentucky] K.G.MM.1 - Identify why and how people and goods move to and within communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a classroom mural illustrating goods and services in their community, emphasizing their roles and importance. They will also transform their classroom into a market day setup, offering homemade goods and services, documenting their experiences through videos and photos. Additionally, the students will construct a tabletop model using recycled materials to depict businesses and homes, visually demonstrating the movement and connection of goods and services within the community.

Launch

Embark on an 'Economy Adventure Day' with the classroom transformed into a miniature town. Set up distinct interactive stations representing local businesses such as a grocery store, hospital, and gas station. Encourage students to navigate through these stations, engaging in relevant activities and discovering the roles of goods and services in a community. This immersive experience will serve as an exciting introduction to understanding the dynamics of community transactions and movement.

Exhibition

Host a 'Community Marketplace Festival' where students showcase their tabletop community models and interactive maps. Invite classmates, teachers, and parents to participate in simulated transactions and tours guided by students through the classroom setup of role-playing activities. Organize storytelling sessions where students share their Mini-Movie Screenings and offer insights into their experiences of buying and selling goods and services, allowing visitors to ask questions and engage in the learning process.
