Learning Goals
Students will be able to explain renewable energy and wind turbine systems by describing how wind can be converted into usable electrical energy.
Students will be able to research aerodynamic factors in wind turbine design by synthesizing information from multiple sources to improve turbine performance.
Students will be able to develop and test a complex mini wind turbine model by iterating on blade shape, angle, and materials.
Students will be able to analyze the effect of blade symmetry and periodicity in turbine rotation by applying trigonometric reasoning to design choices.
Students will be able to communicate design choices and reflection on turbine performance by presenting evidence-based claims and feedback-based revisions.
Products
Wind Turbine Engineering Reflection Portfolio
Students submit an individual portfolio documenting their research, design iterations, test data, and reflections on turbine performance. The portfolio proves individual mastery of renewable energy concepts, aerodynamic reasoning, and the engineering design process.
Mini Wind Turbine Prototype and Virtual Wind Farm Tour Video
Teams build and test a functional mini wind turbine and create a short video explaining their design decisions, test results, and revisions. The product demonstrates collaborative application of engineering, math, research, and communication skills.
