Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage students in a hands-on exploration of renewable energy through the design and construction of wind turbines. By integrating principles of aerodynamics, energy conversion, and real-world site evaluation, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while addressing authentic community needs. This experience aims to foster self-directed learning, effective communication, and content expertise, empowering students to contribute meaningful solutions to energy challenges within their school community.

Learning goals

Through this project, students will develop an understanding of renewable energy principles and the engineering design process by creating functional wind turbine models. They will enhance their research skills by investigating aerodynamic and energy conversion concepts, applying mathematical knowledge of trigonometric functions to optimize turbine efficiency. Students will also cultivate self-directed learning and critical thinking by reflecting on their design iterations and incorporating peer feedback, while practicing effective communication through presenting their projects and engaging with community partners.

Products

Students will create mini wind turbine models designed to optimize energy output, which they will test and demonstrate during the 'Virtual Wind Farm Tour'. These models will showcase students' understanding of aerodynamics and energy conversion principles. Additionally, students will produce short videos capturing their turbines in action, providing a visual narrative of their design process and outcomes. Throughout the project, students will maintain a reflection journal, documenting their learning journey, challenges, and personal growth.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Wind Energy Hackathon,' where students spend a full day rapidly prototyping wind turbine designs using available materials. This event encourages innovation and collaboration in a competitive yet supportive environment, setting the stage for the project's focus on renewable energy solutions. Students will work in teams to brainstorm, design, and construct initial turbine models, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose from the outset.

Exhibition

Students will produce a 'Virtual Wind Farm Tour' by creating short, engaging videos that showcase their mini wind turbine models in action. These videos will highlight the design process, energy output, and innovative features of each turbine, allowing students to demonstrate their engineering skills and understanding of renewable energy. The tour will be shared online with parents, community partners, and other schools, providing a platform for students to communicate their learning and celebrate their achievements.
