The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in an exploration of historical and fictional narratives to understand the impact of fear and rumors on decision-making. Through role-playing, storytelling, and creative projects, students will develop critical thinking and empathy by examining different perspectives and drawing connections between past events and current societal issues. This project encourages students to actively engage with their community, fostering a deeper understanding of fairness, evidence, and the nature of wickedness, while empowering them to propose creative solutions to everyday challenges.
Learning goals
Students will develop critical thinking skills by analyzing the role of fear and rumors in historical and contemporary contexts, drawing connections between the Salem Witch Trials and 'Wicked'. They will enhance their communication and collaboration abilities through role-playing, storytelling, and community engagement activities. Learners will cultivate empathy and creativity by crafting personal narratives and artistic expressions that explore themes of wickedness, fairness, and evidence-based reasoning. They will also learn to apply historical insights to address everyday problems in their community, fostering a deeper understanding of justice and fairness.
Products
Students will establish a fairness council within the school, creating a space for addressing community injustices through restorative practices. They will also produce a 'Wicked Wisdom' podcast series, featuring interviews with community members and historians to explore themes of fear, rumors, and wickedness. These podcasts will be shared at the 'Perspectives Gallery', where students' collaborative mural projects will also be displayed, inviting community engagement and reflection.

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Wicked Beginnings' event where students watch select scenes from 'Wicked', followed by a guided discussion to explore themes of fear, rumors, and wickedness. Connect these themes to the Salem Witch Trials, encouraging students to draw parallels and set the stage for deeper inquiry. Supplement this with a 'Fear and Fairness Forum' featuring interactive activities led by a local historian, allowing students to experience firsthand the spread of rumors and the critical role of evidence.
