The purpose of this project is to engage high school students in a meaningful, hands-on learning experience that connects their passions to real-world community issues. By collaborating with peers, community members, and experts, students will develop critical thinking, communication, and self-directed learning skills as they design and implement a sustainable community garden. Through reflection and exhibition, they will deepen their understanding of their identity and sense of belonging, while showcasing their ability to address complex problems and contribute positively to their community.
Learning goals
Students will develop skills in self-directed learning by setting personal objectives and monitoring their progress through peer-led discussions and feedback. They will enhance their academic mindset by establishing a sense of identity and belonging through critical reflection on their contributions to the community garden project. Critical thinking and problem-solving will be fostered as students explore innovative approaches to address community needs, collaborating with local partners. Effective communication will be practiced through the exhibition and digital platform, where students present and refine their ideas. Collaboration skills will be strengthened as students co-design the garden project, exercising shared decision-making and leadership.

Products
Students will collaboratively design and implement a community garden, working alongside local horticulturists and community members to create a sustainable green space. Throughout the project, they will document the process and its impact on the environment and community well-being. Additionally, students will create a digital portfolio showcasing reflections, feedback, and evidence of learning progress, which they will present at the Community Impact Showcase. The project will culminate in a collaborative mural or visual timeline, representing the collective learning journey and fostering a sense of shared growth.
Launch
Begin the project with a 'Self-Reflection Retreat,' where students engage in activities designed to explore their personal interests and passions. Facilitate peer feedback sessions to help students set meaningful learning objectives aligned with the community garden project. Incorporate guided reflection activities that encourage students to consider their role and impact within their community, fostering a sense of identity and belonging.
Exhibition
Students will present their community garden project at the 'Community Impact Showcase,' where they will share their experiences, challenges, and successes with local leaders, parents, and peers. Each group will create a presentation that includes visual and digital elements, showcasing the garden's development and its impact on the environment and community well-being. This event will include interactive stations where attendees can engage with students, ask questions, and learn more about sustainable gardening practices.
