Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage high school students in a critical exploration of censorship, examining how different countries' approaches reflect cultural values and political systems. Through hands-on workshops with community partners and creative projects, students will develop a nuanced understanding of global perspectives on information access. This experience aims to foster analytical skills, encourage diverse viewpoints, and inspire students to advocate for digital freedom through meaningful, real-world applications.

Learning goals

Students will critically analyze how censorship varies globally and within the US, examining cultural and political influences. They will integrate diverse media to evaluate arguments on censorship, focusing on point of view and evidence. Through collaboration with community partners, students will develop advocacy projects, enhancing their understanding of digital rights and freedom. The project will culminate in a digital campaign and art exhibition, allowing students to creatively express their insights and engage with broader audiences.

Products

Students will create a comprehensive digital campaign that includes a website and social media content to raise awareness about global and US censorship issues. They will also develop visual and digital artwork for the 'Global Voices Gallery,' showcasing their insights and perspectives on censorship through creative expression. Throughout the project, students will engage in workshops with community partners, producing advocacy materials that highlight the impact of technology on information access.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic storytelling session featuring the North Carolina Battle of the Books, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of authors facing censorship. Use this narrative to introduce the concept of censorship and its impact on literature globally. Follow with a brainstorming session where students identify books or media they've encountered that have been subject to censorship, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for deeper exploration into international censorship practices.

Exhibition

Students will curate a 'Global Voices Gallery' as an interactive art exhibit, showcasing visual and digital artwork inspired by their projects on censorship. The exhibition will invite families and community members to engage with diverse perspectives through creative expression, fostering dialogue and understanding. Attendees will explore multimedia presentations, digital campaigns, and interactive installations that highlight students' analyses of censorship across different cultures and political systems.
