Purpose

The purpose of this Health Assisting curriculum is to equip 10th-grade students with essential skills and certifications for healthcare careers through immersive, real-world experiences. By engaging with community partners, students gain firsthand exposure to diverse healthcare environments, fostering a deep understanding of patient care and emergency response. This curriculum emphasizes practical application and reflection, ensuring students develop competencies that are both academically rigorous and professionally relevant, preparing them for future opportunities in the healthcare field.

Learning goals

Students will develop foundational healthcare skills essential for the health assisting field, including patient communication, basic care techniques, and emergency response. They will earn certifications in CPR and First Aid, demonstrating their readiness for real-world healthcare scenarios. Through hands-on experiences and community engagement, students will gain insights into elder care and healthcare innovation, preparing them for diverse career opportunities in the healthcare industry.

Products

Throughout the learning experience, students will create digital journals documenting their skills and reflections, which serve as a personal portfolio of growth and learning. By the end of the program, students will develop a comprehensive care plan as a capstone project, showcasing their ability to integrate knowledge and skills in patient care. Additionally, students will participate in a Community Health Fair, presenting health assessments and wellness tips, and engage in a Healthcare Innovation Forum, proposing solutions to healthcare challenges. Finally, students will earn CPR and First Aid certifications, demonstrating their readiness for real-world healthcare scenarios.

Launch

Begin the program with a dynamic 'Healthcare Skills Bootcamp,' where students engage in interactive workshops led by healthcare professionals. They will rotate through skill stations, practicing vital tasks such as taking vital signs, bandaging, and effective patient communication. This immersive experience sets the stage for the curriculum, allowing students to immediately apply their learning in practical scenarios and build foundational skills for their healthcare journey.

Exhibition

Students will host a Community Health Fair at a local nursing home, offering health assessments and wellness advice to residents and their families, fostering community engagement and shared learning. They will also participate in a Healthcare Innovation Forum, presenting solutions to healthcare challenges based on their experiences, and engaging with industry experts in discussions. The Red Cross Certification Celebration will recognize students' achievements in CPR and First Aid, with guest speakers highlighting the importance of these skills in healthcare.
