Purpose

This project aims to immerse students in the rich cultural heritage of Bermuda, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of its significance in shaping community identity and sustainable tourism. Through hands-on activities, students will explore and document Bermuda's traditions, engaging with cultural practitioners and the community. By creating interactive exhibits and media, students will actively contribute to preserving and promoting Bermuda's cultural legacy, enhancing their skills in collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.

Learning goals

Students will explore and articulate the significance of preserving Bermuda's cultural heritage and its impact on sustainable tourism. They will develop skills in research, collaboration, and multimedia storytelling through the creation of interactive exhibits and media projects. Students will engage with local cultural practitioners to gain firsthand insights, fostering a deeper connection and appreciation for the island's cultural identity. Through reflection and discussion, students will enhance their socio-emotional understanding of cultural preservation's role in shaping community identity.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will create interactive exhibits for a cultural fair, showcasing their understanding of Bermuda's cultural heritage. They will also produce a short documentary or podcast series, featuring interviews with cultural practitioners, to explore the impact of these traditions on tourism. By the end of the project, students will have developed and presented these products at a Bermuda Cultural Expo and a Heritage Film Festival, engaging with the community and demonstrating their insights into cultural preservation and sustainable tourism.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Heritage Hunt' scavenger game across the school campus. Students will work in teams to solve clues related to Bermuda's cultural landmarks and traditions, fostering collaboration and sparking curiosity about the island’s cultural identity. This immersive experience sets the stage for deeper exploration and understanding of Bermuda's cultural heritage and its significance in sustainable tourism.

Exhibition

Students will host a vibrant 'Bermuda Cultural Expo,' transforming their school into a lively marketplace of cultural exploration. Each student group will create interactive booths that showcase Bermuda’s rich cultural heritage through traditional crafts, music, dance, and cuisine, collaborating with local artisans and community members. Additionally, a 'Heritage Film Festival' will feature student-produced documentaries and podcasts, with public screenings followed by engaging Q&A sessions with student filmmakers and local cultural experts. This exhibition will serve as a dynamic platform for students to share their learning and insights with the broader community.
