Purpose

This project aims to immerse eighth-grade students in real-world challenges, fostering their ability to analyze complex data and propose solutions through collaborative efforts. By engaging with community partners and utilizing digital tools, students will develop a deeper understanding of proportional relationships, functions, genetic variation, and sustainable development practices. The project encourages students to communicate their findings effectively, enhancing their critical thinking, problem-solving, and presentation skills while addressing global issues.

Learning goals

Students will develop the ability to create mathematical models using proportional relationships and functions to analyze real-world data, enhancing their skills in data interpretation and communication. They will explore genetic variation and evolutionary processes through hands-on workshops, gaining insights into species survival and adaptation. Additionally, learners will engage in collaborative research projects on sustainable development, applying their understanding of socioeconomic inequality and trade barriers to propose actionable solutions. Through digital storytelling, students will integrate their knowledge of genetic and evolutionary concepts, effectively presenting their findings and reflections using multimedia elements.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.A.4: Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used.
  • Common Core - CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.F.A.1: Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.
  • NGSS - MS-LS4-4: Construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a population increase some individuals' probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create digital portfolios that showcase their work, including mathematical models, research findings, and multimedia presentations. They will develop interactive exhibits and digital storytelling projects that illustrate their understanding of genetic variation and evolutionary processes. By the end, students will present their sustainable development solutions through a digital platform at the Sustainable Futures Showcase, featuring interactive demonstrations and engaging presentations.

Launch

Begin the project with an interactive workshop hosted by community partners from a local science museum, where students engage in hands-on activities exploring genetic variations and evolutionary processes. Follow this with a collaborative brainstorming session on global issues, facilitated by a representative from a global environmental organization, encouraging students to identify challenges and propose initial solutions. Conclude the launch with a digital storytelling challenge, where students create short narratives using multimedia tools to express their initial understanding of proportional relationships and functions in real-world contexts.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a 'Science and Society Symposium,' presenting their research on genetic variations and evolutionary processes through multimedia presentations and panel discussions. They will showcase their sustainable development projects at a 'Sustainable Futures Showcase,' using digital tools and creative presentations to engage the community. At the 'Global Solutions Fair,' students will display their projects addressing complex global issues with interactive booths, digital presentations, and live demonstrations, inviting community partners and local experts to engage with their work.
