Purpose

This project engages middle school students in understanding and addressing the unique safety challenges of their community on the west side of Oahu through environmental stewardship. Students will conduct field studies, including a walking tour of the nearby watershed, to identify safety hazards and propose solutions. By creating a multimedia campaign, students will explore the interconnectedness of community safety and environmental health, focusing on preserving local flora and fauna. The project encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, allowing students to document their learning journey and insights through reflective journaling.

Learning goals

Students will explore the impact of human activities on the environment and understand the importance of environmental stewardship in promoting community safety. They will engage in collaborative discussions, field studies, and role-playing to identify local safety challenges and propose solutions that integrate environmental preservation. Through creating multimedia campaigns, students will develop skills in communication, teamwork, and critical thinking, while fostering a deeper connection to their community and its natural surroundings. Reflective journaling will allow students to document their learning journey and insights, deepening their understanding of the relationship between environmental practices and community well-being.

Products

Students will collaboratively develop a multimedia campaign that includes engaging videos and visually appealing posters. These products will educate the community on environmental practices that enhance safety and well-being, with a focus on preserving local flora and fauna. Throughout the project, students will engage in field studies to gather information and insights, participate in journaling to document their observations and reflections, and refine their communication skills to ensure their campaign effectively addresses the unique safety challenges of the west side of Oahu.

Launch

Kick off the project with an immersive field study at the nearby watershed, allowing students to explore and document local environmental features and safety concerns. Equip students with journals to record observations, sketches, and reflections on the flora, fauna, and human impact they encounter. Encourage group discussions to share insights and brainstorm solutions, setting the foundation for their multimedia campaign on environmental stewardship and community safety.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the project, students will host a community exhibition where they present their multimedia campaigns. This event will feature interactive stations where attendees can view videos and posters, engage in discussions about local environmental practices, and participate in activities that highlight the importance of preserving local flora and fauna. Students will also facilitate workshops that encourage community members to brainstorm and commit to actionable steps for enhancing safety and environmental stewardship in their area. Additionally, students will share excerpts from their reflective journals, offering personal insights and growth experiences that emphasize the connection between community safety and environmental care. The exhibition will serve as a platform for students to share their insights and foster collaborative efforts toward a safer and more sustainable community.
