Purpose

The purpose of this project is to enable students to delve deeply into a foundational skill of their choice, fostering a personalized and meaningful learning journey. Through the creation of a comprehensive portfolio, students will document their progress, reflecting on their achievements and challenges, and demonstrating mastery over time. This hands-on experience will cultivate critical thinking, self-assessment, and communication skills, while encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and share their growth with peers, teachers, and family members.

Learning goals

Students will develop a deep understanding of a foundational skill by engaging in hands-on activities and documenting their progress in a portfolio. They will learn to articulate their learning journey through reflection and peer feedback, fostering critical thinking and communication skills. The project will enhance their ability to present their work confidently to various audiences, including peers, teachers, and family members, while setting personal learning goals for future growth.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a comprehensive portfolio documenting their learning journey, which includes written reflections, multimedia artifacts, and evidence of skill mastery. By the end of the four weeks, students will prepare an oral presentation to accompany their portfolio, showcasing their growth and understanding of the chosen foundational skill. These products will be shared during the symposium and Student-Led Conference Day, providing students with opportunities to articulate their learning process and engage with an audience.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic 'Skills Showcase Fair' where students explore interactive stations featuring demonstrations and hands-on mini-workshops on various foundational skills. This immersive experience will inspire students to select a skill that resonates with their interests and strengths for their portfolio focus. Encourage students to actively engage with presenters and peers, sparking curiosity and excitement as they embark on their learning journey.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Student-Led Conference Day,' inviting their families to attend and engage with the portfolios they have developed. Each student will present their learning journey, highlighting key moments of growth and mastery in their chosen foundational skill. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with students, fostering a deeper understanding of the learning process. This symposium-style exhibition will provide a platform for students to showcase their achievements and reflect on their educational experiences.
