Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in a hands-on exploration of local climate initiatives, fostering critical thinking and creativity as they develop innovative strategies to support and enhance these efforts. Through project-based learning, students will deepen their understanding of weather and climate standards while honing their skills in communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. By creating and presenting a multimedia portfolio, students will articulate their insights and contribute meaningfully to community dialogues on climate action.

Learning goals

Students will deepen their understanding of weather and climate by researching local climate initiatives and identifying innovative strategies to enhance mitigation efforts. They will develop communication skills by defining their audience, purpose, and format for their portfolio presentation. Through the creation and presentation of multimedia portfolios, students will refine their ability to select, develop, and finalize their message, showcasing their mastery of expressing ideas. Additionally, students will engage in reflective journaling to document their learning journey and socio-emotional growth throughout the project.

Products

Students will create a comprehensive multimedia portfolio that includes visual maps, data analysis, and personal reflections on local climate initiatives. This portfolio will culminate in a polished presentation delivered at the 'Climate Champions Showcase,' where students will engage with community stakeholders. Throughout the project, students will iteratively develop and refine their work through peer review sessions, ensuring their final product is both informative and impactful.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Climate Story Mapping Workshop' where students collaboratively create visual maps of their community. These maps will highlight areas impacted by climate change and identify potential sites for new mitigation projects. This hands-on activity will engage students in identifying local climate challenges and opportunities, setting the stage for their research and portfolio development.

Exhibition

Students will present their multimedia portfolios at the 'Climate Champions Showcase,' a gallery-style event designed to foster dialogue and feedback. This exhibition will invite local community leaders, environmental organizations, and peers to engage with students' work, offering insights and constructive critiques. The showcase will serve as a platform for students to articulate their findings and proposed strategies, demonstrating their understanding of local climate initiatives and their ability to express ideas effectively.
