Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the vibrant culture of the Philippines through engaging, hands-on activities that emphasize fun and exploration. By focusing on real-world connections and cultural understanding, students will develop a deeper appreciation for diversity and global perspectives. This week-long journey will allow students to discover the values and history of Filipino culture, fostering curiosity and a lifelong love for learning. Age-appropriate activities will be tailored for three groups: TK-K with simple crafts and games, 1st-4th graders with interactive storytelling and creative projects, and 5th-8th graders with in-depth cultural explorations and presentations.

Learning goals

Group 1 (TK-K) will engage in sensory-based activities like crafting Filipino flags and playing traditional games, fostering cultural awareness through play. Group 2 (1st-4th) will delve into interactive projects such as designing cultural outfits and creating simple Filipino recipes, enhancing their understanding of daily life and traditions. Group 3 (5th-8th) will participate in more complex tasks like building models of traditional Filipino homes and leading storytelling circles, allowing them to explore cultural values and history in depth.

Group 2 (1st-4th) will work on projects such as designing a model of a traditional Filipino home using recycled materials and creating a recipe card for a popular Filipino dish. Group 3 (5th-8th) will delve deeper by crafting a detailed mural of Filipino landmarks and organizing a presentation on Filipino festivals, including a skit or dance performance. All groups will contribute to the Cultural Fair with age-appropriate displays and performances, showcasing their learning and creativity.

Group 1 (TK-K) will start the 'Philippine Fiesta Day' with simple Filipino games like "Tumbang Preso" and create colorful paper parols (star lanterns). Group 2 (1st-4th) will engage in crafting activities and participate in the mini parade, showcasing cultural attire and flags. Group 3 (5th-8th) will explore more complex crafts and lead the parade, while also learning a traditional Filipino dance. All groups will gather to hear stories from a local Filipino cultural organization and learn a Filipino greeting, fostering curiosity and community.

Exhibition

At the end of the week, students will host a vibrant 'Philippine Cultural Fair' where each age group presents their projects. Group 1 (TK-K) will display crafts like Filipino flag art and simple traditional attire, Group 2 (1st-4th) will share models of traditional homes and Filipino food recipes, and Group 3 (5th-8th) will delve into more complex presentations, such as detailed cultural displays and performances. Invite community partners and families to attend, fostering a shared celebration of cultural understanding and appreciation.
