Learning Goals
Students will be able to investigate sleep needs and culturally specific sleep traditions using observations, guided interviews, and shared research to understand how designers learn about the people they serve.
Students will be able to compare sleep-related objects, artworks, patterns, and their uses from specific Indigenous, Mexican, and Afro-Latino communities to understand that cultural designs reflect particular times, places, traditions, and needs.
Students will be able to identify similarities and differences among sleep-related stories from specific Indigenous, Mexican, and Afro-Latino communities through guided drama to understand that cultures may express both shared and distinct ideas about rest.
Students will be able to explore movements inspired by sleep-related sounds, texts, objects, images, symbols, and stories to understand how movement can communicate how a sleep invention works.
Students will be able to brainstorm and prototype multiple sleep-invention ideas based on user needs and respectful cultural learning to understand that human-centered designers consider several possible solutions before choosing one.
Students will be able to refine and explain a sleep invention using feedback about comfort, cultural respect, and usefulness to understand that testing, reflection, and revision improve designs for people.

Cultural Sleep Research and Invention Design Journal
Each student creates illustrated or dictated research notes, a cultural comparison, a user-needs record, multiple invention sketches, a movement idea, and a reflection showing how feedback and learning from specific Indigenous, Mexican, and Afro-Latino traditions changed the design.
Revised Sleep Invention Prototype and Gallery-Walk Presentation
Teams use members’ research and sketches to build, safely test, and revise a low-tech sleep-invention model, then present how it supports rest and respectfully applies cultural learning through simple writing, artwork, speaking, movement, and drama at the class showcase.
