Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to model real-life decisions by writing, reading, evaluating, and generating equivalent variable expressions to represent quantities and compare options.

2

Students will be able to investigate real-life constraints by writing and solving equations of the forms x + p = q and px = q and using substitution to test solutions to equations and inequalities.

3

Students will be able to justify and refine a real-life decision by communicating accurate mathematical reasoning and using critique and reflection to improve its clarity.

Real-Life Decision Investigation Record

Each student documents a real-life decision, defines a variable, writes and evaluates equivalent expressions, solves an equation, tests equation or inequality values by substitution, and independently justifies a recommendation. The record includes midpoint and final reflections describing a helpful strategy and a challenge solved.

Decision Detectives Mathematical Showcase

Teams synthesize members’ investigations into a revised poster, slideshow, comic, or short video that explains a real-life decision and defends a recommendation with expressions, equations, inequalities, and substitution. Teams use feedback at draft and near-final checkpoints before presenting to a visiting fifth- or seventh-grade math class.

Student choices
Mathematical Decision Poster — A visual display combining models, calculations, and a clearly justified recommendation.
Mathematical Decision Slideshow — A sequenced presentation explaining the situation, mathematical investigation, findings, and recommendation.
Mathematical Decision Comic — An illustrated narrative showing characters using expressions, equations, and inequalities to make a decision.
Mathematical Decision Video — A short recorded explanation or dramatization of the problem-solving process and evidence-based recommendation.
