Learning Goals
Students will be able to construct an evidence-based argument explaining how specific internal and external plant and animal structures support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction through structure-function relationships.
Students will be able to model how an animal receives habitat information through its senses, processes that information in its brain, and responds through body structures or behaviors using a sense-process-response system.
Students will be able to document and analyze field-log observations and test data to justify how a LEGO model, game challenge, or 3D-printed piece represents an organism’s structure and survival function through evidence-based modeling.
Students will be able to refine a playable structure-and-survival board game in response to prototype failures, peer input, and fifth-grade user feedback through iterative and empathetic collaboration.
Products
Structure-and-Survival Field Log and Engineering Design Record
Each student independently records labeled observations, explains structure-function relationships and animal sense-process-response pathways, and develops multiple annotated game ideas before using simple criteria, test evidence, and feedback to justify revisions and reflect on collaboration.
Structure-and-Survival Makerspace Board Game
Each team creates, tests, and revises a playable board game featuring scientifically accurate challenge spaces, a LEGO model, and 3D-printed game pieces, then presents evidence of performance, design trade-offs, and improvements while fifth graders play it at the Survival Game Expo.
