Learning Goals
Students will be able to analyze the identity, absolute value, square root, quadratic, cubic, and reciprocal parent functions by comparing their shapes, domains, ranges, intercepts, and intervals of increase or decrease.
Students will be able to construct and interpret transformed and piecewise function models by graphing equations, identifying transformations, and determining context-appropriate domains, ranges, assumptions, and restrictions.
Students will be able to justify and revise a real-world function model using mathematical evidence, peer and teacher feedback, predictions, limitations, and reflection on their problem-solving process.

Individual Function Model Investigation Portfolio
Each student documents analysis of parent functions and independently presents a transformed, piecewise, or rational model with its equation, graph, domain, range, key features, assumptions, predictions, evidence-based justification, and feedback-driven revisions. The portfolio concludes with a reflection on shifts in confidence, collaboration, and problem-solving strategies.
Function Model Showcase Presentation and Defense
Teams present and defend a tested real-world function model to classmates and teachers, explaining its function family, transformations or piecewise rules, graph, domain and range, assumptions, predictions, limitations, and revisions. Each member contributes evidence from individual investigation and responds to panel questions comparing plausible alternative models.
