Learning Goals
Students will be able to investigate how temperature, time, and ingredients affect crystal formation by asking a focused question and interpreting patterns in growth data.
Students will be able to follow a teacher-approved multistep crystal-growing procedure by safely measuring ingredients, mixing solutions, labeling jars, and documenting starting conditions.
Students will be able to analyze observations, measurements, and scientific sources to explain crystal growth patterns and distinguish nonliving crystal formation from the growth and development of living organisms.
Students will be able to communicate evidence-based conclusions and reflect on how observations, questions, feedback, and teamwork shaped their investigation.

Crystal Growth Investigation Journal
Each student documents a focused question, source notes, the team’s procedure and starting conditions, repeated observations and measurements, and analysis of how temperature, time, and ingredients affected crystal formation. A before-and-after journal check compares initial predictions with final evidence-based conclusions, distinguishes crystal formation from organism growth, and includes teamwork reflections and a next-session or future-investigation goal.
Classroom Crystal Investigation Gallery Display
Each team exhibits labeled crystal-growing jars, a documented safe procedure, a shared growth log with data patterns, selected before-and-after journal evidence, and a concise conclusion that accounts for limitations or unexpected results. Team members present how temperature, time, and ingredients influenced crystal formation, explain why crystals are nonliving, and respond collaboratively to visitor questions and feedback.
