Learning Goals
Students will be able to research bird nesting needs to explain how entrance size, ventilation, drainage, and shelter support a birdhouse’s function and protection.
Students will be able to define measurable birdhouse criteria and constraints to frame a design problem that balances function, protection, materials, safety, and simple construction.
Students will be able to evaluate competing birdhouse concepts using research evidence and a decision matrix to justify a design selection based on agreed-upon criteria and trade-offs.
Students will be able to construct, test, and improve a functional birdhouse prototype to demonstrate how test data, peer feedback, and reflection drive engineering iteration.
Products
Birdhouse Engineering Design Notebook
Each student produces a research-based design brief with source notes and questions, measurable criteria and constraints, multiple annotated concepts, a decision matrix, and an individual justification and reflection connecting test evidence and peer feedback to proposed improvements.
Tested Birdhouse Prototype and Design Expo Presentation
Each team safely constructs, tests, and revises a functional birdhouse prototype with an appropriate entrance, ventilation, drainage, and shelter, then presents evidence about its function, materials, design choices, trade-offs, challenges solved, limitations, and team decision-making while answering audience questions.
