Learning Goals
Students will be able to define measurable birdhouse design criteria and constraints based on local bird habitat needs, biodiversity, available materials, and school or neighborhood conditions.
Students will be able to evaluate competing birdhouse designs using annotated sketches, a decision matrix, and trade-off analysis against jointly agreed-upon criteria.
Students will be able to construct and test a birdhouse by applying scientific ideas about bird habitat and collecting organized performance data.
Students will be able to analyze birdhouse test results to revise the design for improved performance and potential support of local biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Students will be able to justify and reflect on birdhouse design decisions by communicating testing evidence, shared contributions, changed thinking, and a next-version improvement.
Products
Individual Birdhouse Engineering Design Notebook
Each student documents habitat-based criteria and constraints, multiple annotated concepts, a decision-matrix comparison, test data analysis, an evidence-based revision, and an independent justification of the final design. A concluding reflection explains changed thinking, individual contributions, and a next-version improvement.
Tested and Revised Birdhouse Prototype with Design Expo Defense
Each team builds, safely tests, and revises a birdhouse intended to support local birds, then presents the prototype with its shared criteria, design comparison, analyzed test results, trade-offs, limitations, and evidence-based justification. The team identifies one improvement for a future version and participates in the final reflection circle.
