Learning Goals
Students will be able to explain how wood properties, arched hull shape, construction choices, and weight placement affect a boat model’s strength, flotation, stability, and load capacity.
Students will be able to analyze quantitative flotation, balance, and load-capacity data with digital or mathematical tools to compare proposed arched wooden boat designs.
Students will be able to evaluate and revise an arched wooden boat model using shared design criteria, controlled weight-placement tests, peer feedback, and identified model limitations.
Students will be able to communicate how evidence and teamwork shaped the change from an initial boat sketch to a final design, revising their explanation for purpose and audience.

Arched Wooden Boat Engineering Design Report
Each student submits an illustrated report containing distinct concept sketches, material and shape reasoning, a criteria-based comparison, a digital table or graph of team test data, an evaluation of model limitations, and a revised reflection comparing the first sketch with the final boat. The report explains how evidence informed revisions and identifies one academic skill and one teamwork skill that improved.
Tested 6-by-6-Inch Arched Wooden Boat and Harbor Presentation
Each team builds, safely water-tests, and revises a 6-by-6-inch arched wooden boat, then exhibits its flotation, balance, and load capacity using equal weights and shared criteria. The presentation uses data to justify material, hull-shape, construction, and weight-placement decisions; compares alternatives; identifies limitations and trade-offs; and explains how members collaborated on revisions.
