Learning Goals
Students will be able to analyze observations of foam, oxygen gas production, and temperature change to explain evidence of a chemical reaction and thermal energy release in elephant toothpaste.
Students will be able to investigate a self-generated question about the elephant toothpaste reaction by synthesizing evidence from several credible sources and generating related focused questions.
Students will be able to design, test, and refine a teacher-approved elephant toothpaste showcase setup using temperature data, observations, criteria, constraints, and evidence from testing.
Students will be able to respond respectfully to evidence-based critiques and audience questions about their reaction model, testing procedure, design decisions, and group growth.
Products
Elephant Toothpaste Engineering and Research Notebook
Each student documents a self-generated research question, notes from several credible sources, an independent reaction explanation, an annotated setup concept, analysis of team test data and feedback, and a brief reflection on scientific and collaborative growth.
Live Elephant Toothpaste Thermal-Energy Showcase Station
Each team safely demonstrates a teacher-approved elephant toothpaste setup, using a visual reaction model and test data to explain foam, oxygen gas, heat, design modifications, and limitations while respectfully answering visitor questions. Learners wear appropriate protective equipment, use a spill tray and marked viewing distance, and never touch or taste reaction materials.
