Learning Goals
Students will be able to formulate a focused, testable question about how one environmental variable affects crystal formation by synthesizing information from several credible sources and generating related questions.
Students will be able to design and document a fair crystal-growth test that changes one environmental variable, controls other conditions, and collects safe, systematic observations and measurements.
Students will be able to construct an evidence-based explanation of crystal formation and distinguish this nonliving process from organism growth influenced by environmental and genetic factors.
Students will be able to communicate and revise investigation findings by building on peers’ ideas, using feedback, sharing decisions, and reflecting on changes in scientific understanding and teamwork.

Individual Crystal-Growth Investigation Notebook
Each student documents question development, notes from several sources, the fair-test method, observations and measurements, personal data analysis, an evidence-based explanation, limitations, follow-up questions, and before-and-after reflections. The notebook also distinguishes nonliving crystal formation from organism growth influenced by environmental and genetic factors.
Crystal Growth Science Showcase Presentation
Each team presents sealed, labeled crystals with a scientific display synthesizing its research, tested variable, controls, data visualization, findings, anomalies, limitations, and evidence-based comparison of crystal formation and organism growth. Every member contributes to the explanation, responds to audience questions, and identifies how shared decisions and feedback improved the investigation.
