Learning Goals & Products

Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to define birdhouse design criteria and constraints using scientific knowledge of bird safety, shelter needs, drainage, ventilation, weather protection, durability, materials, and construction safety.

2

Students will be able to generate and evaluate multiple measured birdhouse blueprints by applying shared criteria, constraints, and evidence-based trade-off analysis.

3

Students will be able to construct and safely test a functional birdhouse prototype to determine how well it meets specifications for usability, stability, drainage, ventilation, durability, weather protection, and creative design.

4

Students will be able to optimize a birdhouse design by using test data, peer feedback, documented mistakes, and reflection to justify trade-offs, revisions, and future improvements.

Individual Birdhouse Engineering Design Portfolio

Each student produces a concise portfolio containing the design problem, bird research, measurable criteria and constraints, multiple annotated concept sketches, a measured blueprint, a decision matrix, predicted performance, and evidence-based justification. The portfolio concludes with an individual reflection explaining mistakes, feedback, learning growth, revisions, and next steps.

Tested and Revised Functional Birdhouse Prototype and Design Expo Presentation

Each team safely constructs a birdhouse from evaluated student concepts, tests it against agreed specifications, revises and retests it, and documents before-and-after evidence. At the Birdhouse Design Expo, the team presents its prototype, blueprint, test data, shared decisions, trade-offs, limitations, creative features, and potential benefit to local birds.
