Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to analyze how temperature, solution concentration, cooling, and evaporation influence crystal formation rate, size, and shape through particle motion, solubility, and crystallization.

2

Students will be able to construct an evidence-based explanation that distinguishes nonliving crystal formation from organism growth influenced by environmental and genetic factors.

3

Students will be able to design, test, and modify a safe crystal-growing system that uses a teacher-approved sealed chemical hot or cold pack to control thermal conditions.

4

Students will be able to justify crystal-growing and thermal-control design decisions using measurements, observations, graphs, trade-offs, and limitations.

5

Students will be able to evaluate changes in their scientific understanding, predictions, communication, shared decision-making, and teamwork across the crystal-growth project.

Crystal-Growth Engineering Notebook and Before-and-After Reflection

Each student documents initial predictions, annotated system concepts, criteria and constraints, measurements, observations, graph-based analysis, and an evidence-based explanation comparing crystal formation with organism growth. The student also evaluates design trade-offs and revisions and completes a before-and-after reflection on scientific understanding, communication, and teamwork.

Tested Crystal-Growing System and Crystal Growth Gallery Display

Each team constructs, tests, and revises a safe thermal-control system using a teacher-approved sealed chemical hot or cold pack, grows a crystal, and presents the crystal with process evidence, graphs, design changes, limitations, and scientific explanations. The exhibition also documents how members combined individual ideas, shared decisions, resolved challenges, and answered the essential question.
