Purpose

Students will use artistic expression, pattern-making, and design problem-solving to create an efficient bedroom model that reflects their identities and needs.

Hook

Essential Question(s)
  • How can patterns help us design a bedroom that uses space efficiently?
  • How can patterns help us create a bedroom that shows who we are and meets our needs?

Align

Students will analyze repeating and growing patterns, measure bedroom features, and use scaled grid models to arrange furniture efficiently. They will apply a design process—identify needs, brainstorm, prototype, gather feedback, and revise—to create a bedroom that is functional and personally meaningful. Through sketches, pattern samples, and a final model, students will use artistic choices to communicate identity and experience the power of art to shape everyday spaces. Their work will address: “How do patterns help design an efficient bedroom?” and “How can patterns help us create a bedroom that shows who we are and what we need?”

Competencies
  • Artistic Expression - Power of art (FK.AC.1.a)
  • Problem Solving - Using design techniques (OT.PS.2.c)
  • Artistic Expression - Making art (FK.AC.1.b)

Partner

Partner with a local interior designer or furniture-store space planner for one classroom visit and one virtual feedback session. The partner can demonstrate how repeating patterns, furniture placement, and clear pathways make a bedroom efficient, then help students consider how patterns communicate personality and support individual needs. Students can transform the classroom floor into a life-size bedroom grid using painter’s tape and test movable paper furniture layouts in small groups. During the feedback session, the partner can respond to student models and suggest practical revisions that balance function, safety, and artistic expression.

Produce

Students will create a labeled floor plan and a 3D model or digital collage of a bedroom that uses repeating patterns in décor, furniture placement, or storage. They will apply a design process to identify personal needs, test arrangements, gather peer feedback, and revise the room for efficient use of space. A brief artist statement will explain how their pattern choices show who they are, support what they need, and demonstrate the power of art to shape everyday environments.

Assessment

Use observation checklists during sketching and model-making to assess how students test patterns, solve layout problems, use materials, and revise designs. Assess the final bedroom design with a rubric measuring purposeful pattern use, efficient organization, reflection of personal identity and needs, craftsmanship, and explanation of design choices. Students will present their designs and point to specific evidence showing how patterns improve both function and artistic expression. Students will complete a brief self-assessment and use peer feedback to identify one successful choice and one revision they made.
