Phenomenon

When you walk through the city, notice how some recycling bins are overflowing with mixed materials while others are neatly sorted. What factors influence how people sort their waste, and how can technology help improve this process?

The Challenge

Recycling is crucial for reducing waste and conserving resources, yet the complexity of sorting materials often leads to inefficiencies and contamination in recycling processes. Understanding these challenges can help improve waste management systems and promote environmental sustainability. How can we design and program ozobots to simulate a recycling process, so that our school can better understand the importance of sorting waste correctly?

Standards
  • 2-3.CT.1 - Create a model of an object or computational process in order to identify patterns and essential elements of the object or process.
  • 2-3.CT.10 - Develop and document a plan that outlines specific steps taken to complete a project.

What You Will Learn And Do

Observe and categorize recyclable materials to identify patterns and understand recycling symbols. Explore real-world recycling challenges by designing and testing ozobot paths that simulate waste movement through a facility. Create and refine these paths based on observations and peer feedback. Present findings and proposed solutions through a class debate, highlighting the importance of proper waste sorting.

The Learning Journey

Phases Learning Outcome
Discover
I can explore the recycling process by observing and categorizing different materials, identifying patterns in recycling symbols, and understanding the importance of sorting waste correctly through hands-on activities with ozobots.
Examine
I can collect and categorize recyclable materials to identify patterns and understand recycling symbols. I can design and test ozobot paths to simulate waste movement through a recycling facility, adjusting based on observations. I can participate in a class debate to discuss recycling importance, using my findings to propose solutions.
Engineer
I can develop a plan to design and create paths for ozobots that simulate the movement of waste through a recycling facility, using recyclable materials to build models and test different routes, while documenting each step and making adjustments based on observations and feedback.
Do
I can test my ozobot recycling path by observing how it navigates through different recycling scenarios, collect data on its performance, and make adjustments to improve its accuracy in sorting waste correctly.
Share
I can share our recycling simulation by guiding our ozobots through the paths we designed, explaining how each path represents a step in the recycling process, and discussing the importance of sorting waste correctly with our classmates, teachers, and invited community partners from New York City.
