Learning Goals & Products

Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to formulate a focused investigable question about how plant and animal structures function in a local habitat to guide systematic scientific inquiry

2

Students will be able to design and carry out a structured observation method for documenting plant and animal structures to produce precise and reliable evidence

3

Students will be able to analyze evidence about internal and external plant and animal structures to explain how structure and function support survival, growth, behavior, reproduction, matter and energy flow, or adaptation to a habitat

4

Students will be able to construct a model of an animal receiving sensory information, processing it in the brain, and responding to show how structures support different responses to habitat conditions

5

Students will be able to justify and revise a claim about plant and animal structure functions using relevant evidence, scientific reasoning, and concrete limitations to draw warranted conclusions

6

Students will be able to communicate investigation findings and reflect on respectful listening, shared decisions, and feedback to demonstrate how collaboration strengthens scientific inquiry

Plant-and-Animal Structure Investigation Notebook and CER Slide

Each student documents a selected question, structured observation method, raw notes, sketches, data display, sensory-response model, and personal analysis before creating a CER slide explaining one plant and one animal structure. The notebook also identifies conflicting evidence or limitations and includes partner-talk and collaboration reflections.

Paired Plant-and-Animal Structure Model Station and Investigation Presentation

Teams synthesize members' evidence into a gallery station with paired structure models, a sensory-information pathway, a visualized comparison, shared conclusions, limitations, and a new question. During the Survival Structure Gallery Walk, members share presentation roles and respond to questions and feedback from peers, the Humane Society, and Birch Aquarium guests.
