Learning Goals
Students will be able to observe campus spaces and nearby community features to identify what makes Bertrand welcoming, healthy, and beautiful.
Students will be able to measure, compare, and sort campus areas and planting spaces to plan improvements with appropriate size and placement.
Students will be able to investigate how native plants need light, water, soil, and care to grow successfully on campus.
Students will be able to write short observations, captions, plant cards, and thank-you notes that explain campus changes and community helpers.
Students will be able to collaborate across grade levels to generate, revise, and justify campus beautification ideas using feedback from peers, teachers, and community partners.
Students will be able to create maps, drawings, photos, and simple data displays that show before-and-after campus changes and explain how those changes reflect Bertrand’s people and values.
Products
Personal Campus Research Portfolio with Native Plant Prototype
Each student creates an individual portfolio with observation notes, a labeled mini map or sketch, one native-plant research page, and a simple prototype such as a plant card, sign, or bed design idea. This product shows personal understanding of campus needs and how a design choice could help Bertrand.
Growing Bertrand Campus Beautification Plan and Showcase Display
Mixed-grade teams produce a shared campus map with labeled planting areas, native plant choices, measurements, captions, before-and-after photo boards, and a community reflection display. The team product is presented at the Blooming Bertrand Showcase or Our Beautiful Bertrand Expo to explain the problem, design choices, revisions, and next steps.
