Learning Goals
Students will be able to investigate a historical case of genocide or oppression by identifying victims, perpetrators, systems of injustice, resistance, and memorialization.
Students will be able to evaluate primary and secondary sources about genocide or oppression by comparing origin, purpose, perspective, and reliability.
Students will be able to analyze how memorials, art, music, poetry, performance, and testimony communicate suffering, resistance, and remembrance.
Students will be able to design and justify a memorializing product in a chosen medium that uses evidence from research to explain the historical event and its legacy.
Students will be able to reflect on how historical oppression connects to present-day bias, exclusion, and action by articulating why responsible remembrance matters.
Products
Individual Research Investigation Notebook
A structured notebook or digital research log showing the student’s driving question, source evaluations, notes, evidence chart, and personal analysis of the chosen genocide or oppression case. It must document how the student refined ideas over time and how their evidence supports their thinking.
Collaborative Memorialization Symposium Presentation
A team investigation report and live presentation that synthesizes members’ evidence into one defensible interpretation of the event, resistance, and memorialization. The presentation must include visuals, sourced claims, a rationale for the chosen medium, and discussion of conflicting or unexpected findings.
