Learning Goals & Products

Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to identify native plants, invasive species, and evidence of habitat change from nursery photos, seed packets, home observations, and story images.

2

Students will be able to compare pictures, text details, and before-and-after scenes to explain how invasive species affect food, shelter, recreation, and habitat use.

3

Students will be able to ask a simple investigable question about how an invasive species changes a local habitat and define what evidence to look for.

4

Students will be able to gather and record observations from photos, texts, maps, and home or neighborhood walks using drawings, labels, and picture charts.

5

Students will be able to analyze evidence from two simple communication tools or model solutions to determine which one teaches habitat protection more clearly.

6

Students will be able to build and improve a simple sign, flyer, or light/sound communication device that tells others how to protect a local habitat from invasive species.

7

Students will be able to present a skit, freeze-frame, or museum-style explanation that uses evidence to show how invasive species spread and change habitats.

Invasive Species Investigation Notebook

Students complete a research notebook with their question, observations, picture sorts, habitat drawings, and notes from texts, maps, and home observations. The notebook shows individual evidence of what changed, what it means for people and animals, and which communication idea worked best.

Change in Our Backyard Habitat Protection Presentation

Teams share a short formal presentation with one student-made sign, flyer, or light/sound tool and a freeze-frame or skit showing how an invasive species spreads and affects a habitat. The presentation must combine members' evidence, explain the better solution choice, and name limitations or unanswered questions.
