Students will be able to investigate real users of a house, business, or community space through interviews, observations, and notes to identify needs and pain points.

Students will be able to define a problem statement for a functional building model using evidence from user research and clear criteria and constraints.

Students will be able to generate multiple solution ideas for lighting, security, accessibility, or temperature control in a building model.

Students will be able to build and test simple circuits, mechanisms, and coded controls in a scale model building to collect data about how the system works.

Students will be able to analyze test data from prototypes and compare design options to identify which features best meet the criteria and constraints.

Students will be able to refine a building prototype based on peer feedback, teacher feedback, and user feedback from at least one real interaction.

Students will be able to justify final design choices in a presentation by connecting user needs, scientific principles, and test evidence.

User Needs Interview Notes, Problem Statement, and Prototype Page

Each student will submit a one-page research artifact and a labeled individual concept prototype page showing what they learned from a real user. The product must include interview/observation evidence, a clear How Might We problem statement, and a simple prototype that responds to the identified need.

Functional Smart Space Model and Stakeholder Expo Presentation

Teams will build a working scale model of a house, business, or community space that uses electrical, mechanical, or coded controls to meet user needs. They will present the model with a shared problem statement, test data, revision history, and a clear explanation of how each member’s individual research informed the final solution.
